The Hft Virtual Smarthouse showcases some of the assistive technologies that people may use around their home to improve their independence and quality of life, and increase their safety.
During the Covid-19 crisis and where staffing levels are limited, technology can play a key role in helping to maintain people’s independence and safety, as well as helping people to stay in touch with family and friends.

For people who struggle to open doors or have physical disabilities, the simple act of moving from one room to another or going outside can represent a barrier to independence either because it’s not easily achievable, or because the person affected is reliant on the presence of a third party.
These are bed or chair-based sensors that can alert someone if you don’t return to your bed after a set amount of time or as soon as you get out of a chair. The settings can be configured to suit your needs.
Allows you to make a call by pressing the photo of the person you wish to speak to.
There are a wide variety of communication aids available. From single-message buttons, to electronic word boards and more complex solutions that can be controlled by eye movement.
Open and close your curtains by the press of a button using a remote control, a switch or a tablet.
A variety of different devices, such as a flashing beacon or vibrating pillow alert, that are used to alert individuals with hearing or visual impairments that there may be an issue. For example these devices can be linked into the fire alarm and alert when the alarm goes off.
Unlock the door without the need to use a key, using just your finger print, a key fob or face recognition.
There are many different types of easy mobile phones, from simple smartphones to those with fewer, large buttons. Some also have an SOS function, whilst others have picture-dialing
Easy remote controls are similar to regular remote controls, but with fewer buttons, making them easier to use.
These are bed-based sensors and will alert you or someone else if the bed is wet.
